Colin Corner

Colin Corner is currently Principal Bass with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, following a two-year appointment as section bass in the Minnesota Orchestra. Previously, he served as Associate Principal Bass in the Vancouver Symphony and Assistant Principal and section bass in the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans. He received First Place in the 2003 International Society of Bassists Orchestral Competition, which led to a one-week internship with the Detroit Symphony, and he received Third Place in the same competition in 2001. Mr. Corner was also a recipient of the Interlochen Double Bass Class Studio Award in 1997, which has since been renamed the Colin Corner Bass Award in his honor. He is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, where he studied with Lawrence Hurst. Colin is currently on the double bass faculty at the Hochstein School in Rochester, NY. He enjoys playing jazz, composing, and exploring early music and historical bass in his spare time, and also plays electric bass in 2 rock bands: The Greener Grass Band, a funky jam band, and The Shuffling Madness, a Jethro Tull tribute band. Proud of his equipment that he plays with the RPO, Mr. Corner plays on a bass made by Joseph Hill, c. 1780, the purchase of which was made possible by the Musical Instrument Loan Fund from the NY State Council for the Arts. Also, he plays on 2 bows made by Mordecai Lurie, a former principal violist for the RPO. He has given masterclasses/recitals at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Shenandoah Conservatory, Ithaca College, Hochstein, Palm Beach Atlantic University, ISB Conventions, and has recently served as Guest Principal Bass with the NAC Orchestra in Ottawa.
